Cheer: Campus garden bountiful project

Although parking space is always cramped on the Bemidji State University campus, turning an area intended to be paved over into an organic vegetable garden adds to the quality of life at BSU. The plot has room for 19 student and faculty gardens and provides the satisfaction of bountiful produce.

Cheer: New school year

We want to welcome students back to campus as Bemidji State University begins another school year today. The students began arriving late last week, and it was interesting to note the arrival of freshman Sam Dill, the Baltimore girl who found Bemidji State through an Internet search. She says she was looking for a small-town school in a place of natural beauty. No one around here should be surprised that BSU?showed up in such a search.

Jeer: No Olympics

The U.S. Olympic Committee has notified all interested cities that it will not submit a bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympics. At issue is the inability of the USOC to work out a long-simmering revenue-sharing deal with the International Olympic Committee. Countries have until Sept. 1 to submit the name of candidate cities, but committee members don't believe they can pull together a winning bid that could serve the Olympic and Paralympic movement. The USOC's decision not to bid for 2020 means there will be at least a 20-year gap between Olympics in the United States. The last games on U.S. soil were the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics in 2002 and the last Summer Olympics were the Atlanta Games in 1996.

Cheer: Soccer Day

Soccer is one of the most popular amateur sports, as well as a game that promotes fitness. Bemidji Soccer Day Saturday gave youngsters between the ages of 8 and 14 the opportunity to try out the game, if they were new to the sport, and to show off their skills as veterans.

Cheer: Connecting

Congratulations to all who attended and sponsored Bemidji's Cultural Connections celebration Friday at the Lake Bemidji Waterfront. It was an opportunity for people of different backgrounds and cultures to realize just how similar they are.
