Pine River boy injured in snowmobile accident

A car-versus-snowmobile accident reported about 2:15 p.m. Sunday west of Backus resulted in non-life-threatening injuries to a Pine River boy.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol out of Brainerd:

Austin J. McAllister, 13, was driving a 1997 Polaris Supersport snowmobile on a trail near Highway 87, 4 miles west of Backus. A 1995 Saturn SL2 driven by Kris M. Traut, 45, of St. Cloud, was eastbound on Highway 87 near the trail crossing.

The snowmobile crossed the highway and the two vehicles collided on the icy roadway.

McAllister, who was wearing a helmet, was taken to St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd.

Traut, who was wearing his seat belt, was not injured.

The snowmobile sustained severe damage; the Saturn sustained moderate damage.
