BEMIDJI – A Bemidji police squad car sustained major damage after a pickup truck slammed into it early Friday morning.

Brett Michael Delange

Police Chief Mike Mastin said an “officer narrowly escaped injury as the collision occurred.”

Brett Michael Delange, 22, failed field sobriety testing and a preliminary breath test, according to a news release issued by police. He was arrested on suspicion of a fourth-degree charge of driving while intoxicated.

Further, the release spelled out details of the collision:

About 2:30 a.m., a 1999 Dodge pickup collided with the rear of a Bemidji squad car while an officer was conducting a separate traffic stop near the intersection of 13th Street Northeast on Bemidji Avenue.

“The collision caused major damage to the rear of the squad car and pushed it into the rear end of the first vehicle causing moderate damage,” the release said. “No other injuries were reported.”
