Pete Fenson lone unbeaten at national curling tournament
The Pete Fenson rink of Bemidji won two matches Sunday and two more on Monday to retain sole possession of first place in men's round-robin play at the USA Curling Nationals in Fargo.
Monday's action saw Fenson defeat Heath McCormick 9-4 in the afternoon round and Craig Disher 7-5 in the late session, using solo steals in the seventh, ninth and 10th ends to earn the win. On Sunday Fenson stopped Matt Hamilton 8-2 and Zach Jacobson 6-2.
Today's action sees Fenson tangling with Jason Larway at 2:30 p.m.
Fenson opened the tournament with a 6-4 victory late Saturday night over Geoff Goodland. Fenson's teammates are Shawn Rojeski of Chisholm, Joe Polo of Duluth and Ryan Brunt of Bemidji.
In women's play the two rinks with Bemidji ties, Allison Pottinger and Cassie Potter, are 4-1 heading into today's two draws.
The Potter rink, which includes sisters Cassie Potter and Jamie Haskell, won both of its matches Monday, blitzing Nicole Reiser 9-4 and Chrissy Haase 8-2.
The Pottinger rink, which includes Bemidji native Natalie Nicholson, split on Monday. It downed Norma O'Leary 7-3 in the morning round but lost to Patti Lank 9-8 in the afternoon draw. That game matched a pair of unbeatens and Lank scord the winner in the 10th endd.
The women's teams have two draws today. Potter will battle Erica Brown at 10 a.m. while Pottinger will face Sormunen. In the evening session Pottinger will battle Reiser and Potter will match shots with Jenna Haag.
