Pedestrian struck and killed at I-35 rest stop

A 62-year-old Cloquet man was killed Wednesday evening at an Interstate 35 rest area in Carlton County.

The Minnesota State Patrol reported that it was called to the Mahtowa rest area off northbound I-35 about 5:30 p.m. It said a 2004 Ford pickup hit and killed the Cloquet man, who was on foot.

Witnesses saw a truck leaving the scene, and a State Patrol trooper spotted a vehicle matching the description traveling northbound on I-35. The driver of the suspect vehicle would not stop and fled authorities before eventually being taken into custody.

The suspect is a 55-year-old man from Duluth; more details on the case are to be released Thursday.

The Carlton County Sheriff’s Office said all details of the accident were going through the patrol.
