Paul L. Carey, 91, of Park Rapids, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, at Heritage Living Center in Park Rapids.
The funeral was held Tuesday at the Assembly of God Church in Park Rapids with the Rev. Art Wood officiating. A visitation was held Jan. 12 at Cease Family Funeral Home in Park Rapids. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Park Rapids.
Pallbearers were his grandsons, Frank Rezac, Craig Rezac, Tom Slover, Jason Slover, Jesse Slov, Jesse Carey, Paul Carey and John Carey.
Honorary pallbearers were his granddaughters, Tammy Dufeck, Jenny Binstock, Richelle Ortiz, Christa Weiland, Ashley Carey, Amy Carey and Anna Carey.
He was born July 17, 1917, to Paul Sr. and Pearl (Ruth) Carey in Crookston. He moved to Park Rapids when he was 5 years old. He graduated from high school in 1938. He lettered in football and was in track, basketball and baseball. He was involved in Golden Gloves for 47 years and won at regionals in 1940. His passion for boxing has changed many young men's lives.
He married Ma Donna Mae Hensel in Placerville, Calif. She died Dec. 1, 1958.
He married Eloise Vivian Westerlund Aug. 5, 1961, in Park Rapids. They combined their families and collectively had eight children.
He worked various jobs. He worked at Nei Bottling, Luxury Ice Cream Store and Creamery and retired from Ravens Den in 1972.
He enjoyed making crafts and working in his shop. He also enjoyed visiting and meeting new people, duck hunting, fly fishing and sitting by a campfire, playing guitar and singing.
He is survived by his wife; children, Barb (Joseph) Rezac of Baxter, Minn., Dianna Weiland of Waconia, Minn., David (Terry) Carey of Prescott, Ariz., James (Pat) Carey of Bemidji, Barb (Gary) Slover of Brooks, Minn., Wayne (Kris) Carey of Bemidji, Joleen (Shannon) Fitzloff of Winter Garden, Fla., and John (Cheri) Carey of Bemidji; sister, Virginia (Harry) Engh of Omak, Wash.; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
