Paul Bunyan Invitational: Bemidji takes third place
Bemidji High School claimed third place in both divisions Thursday at the Paul Bunyan Invitational indoor track and field meet at the Gillett Recreation/Fitness Center in Bemidji.
Grand Forks Red River won the boys and girls team titles. The Roughrider boys scored 165 points to edge rival Grand Forks Central by 11. Bemidji had 105.
The Red River girls won with 105.33 points. Detroit Lakes was second with 74 and Bemidji third with 61.
Senior Analisa Huschle of Bagley-Fosston leaped her way to three first-place finishes, winning the high jump, long jump and triple jump. She was named most valuable athlete in the girls division. Bemidji senior Alex Schoneberger, who won the 800-meter run, was named most valuable athlete in the boys division.
Sophomore Isak Sommer and Schoneberger were individual first-place finishers for the Lumberjack boys. Sommer won the 400-meter dash in 54.25 seconds. Teammates Kevin Nelson and Eric Hernesman finished fifth and sixth. Schoneberger won the 800 in 1:59.74, while teammates Scott Hulsebus and Richard Seado took fourth and fifth.
Bemidji's 4x800 and 4x400 relay units also came in first.
Brady Schmidt had a big day for the Jacks. The sophomore took second in the 60-meter dash, fourth in the 200 and fifth in the long jump. Teammate Cole Bardwell came in fourth in the 60 and fifth in the 200.
Junior Jon Henry of Bemidji cleared 11 feet to place third in the pole vault. Teammate Kyle Huewe took sixth in the triple jump. Zac Declusin added a fifth-place finish in the high jump.
Bemidji's John Buckanaga took fifth in the 1,600. The Jacks? 4x200 relay unit finished third.
Bemidji's girls won the 4x800 relay with a time of 10:07.95. It took eighth in the 4x400 and 10th in the 4x200.
Senior Bailey Drewes turned in a second-place finish in the 1,600. Sophomore Alli Heifort captured second in the shot put, while teammate Callie Johnson placed sixth.
Amanda Hunt took fifth in the high jump.
Freshman Claire Laakso took fourth in the 60-meter dash. The Jacks had three in the top eight of the 400, with Blake Bardwell fifth, Jenna Truedson seventh and Amber Peterson eighth. Peterson added a fifth-place finish in the pole vault. Bemidji's Rachel Becker placed fourth in the triple jump.
Bemidji also had two scorers in the 800, with Danielle Gronhovd fifth and Kayla Olson eighth.
