Patricia Edna Booker, 73
Patricia Edna Booker, 73, of Bemidji, formerly of Park Rapids, died on Thursday, April 19, 2007, at Neilson Place Nursing Facility, surrounded by her loved ones.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at the First Lutheran Church in Akeley with Rev. Ken Nyhusmoen and Rev. Abe Cardosa officiating. A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday at the Jones-Pearson Funeral Home of Park Rapids and one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery of Milaca. Following the service, a luncheon will be hosted by the First Lutheran Church in Akeley.
Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jack Stout, Tiger Stout, Loren Bruce Sr., Ron Oines, Gus Wickey, Bradley Bruce and Andy Roberts.
She was born on May 21, 1933, to William and Edna (Bethel) Phelps. She was the seventh of 11 children. She attended public school in Illinois and following her graduation was employed by such firms as Western Electric, Chun King and the Midwest Country Club. On Nov. 10, 1950, she married John Freund. They had six children, one of which died shortly after birth. The couple moved to Minnesota and resided there with their family until the time of his death in 1969. Following his death, she returned to school to obtain her GED and some college credits from Bemidji State University. On Jan. 26, 1980, she married Charles Allen Booker Jr. They had one son. She lost her husband in 1991 to cancer. During her time in Minnesota, she was employed by the Ringer Manufacturing Company, Angler's Tavern and the Mahube Council. She and her second husband also owned the Swapp Shoppe in Park Rapids for a number of years.
A talented seamstress and craftswoman, she custom designed wedding dresses and western wear. Her room at Neilson Place was a place where people liked to gather and visit, and despite her health issues, there was a never ending list of projects she wanted to complete. As a mother, she took great delight in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She spent the last years of her life battling COPD, heart disease and diabetes. In 2005, she entered Neilson Place. Prior to that time, she had spent most her life in the Park Rapids, Osage and Chamberlain areas.
She is survived by her children, Michael (Diane) Freund of Richfield, Frank (Debby) Freund of Park Rapids, Dawn (David) Buzay of Chamberlain, Daniel (Debbie) Freund of Park Rapids, Cheri (Dennis) Stout of Puposky and Royal (Cassie) Booker of Chamberlain; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Pheifer of Gilman, Ill. and Jean (Fritz) Craig of Park Rapids; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; infant son, John; brothers, Jim, Steve, George, Tom, Michael and Jack Phelps; and sisters, Katherine Faber and Shirley Phelps.
