Park Rapids man struck by freight train identified

DETROIT LAKES, Minn. - A man killed by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train near Detroit Lakes, Minn., last month has been identified by Becker County officials.

Norman Lee Maunu, 54, of Park Rapids, Minn., was struck by the train about 7 p.m. Dec. 18.

The eastbound train hit Maunu as he was walking 400 yards east of a railroad crossing, according to the Becker County Sheriff's Office. He was reported killed on impact.

Maunu was a resident at a Park Rapids apartment building and had no relatives in the area, according to the sheriff 's office.

His relatives live in Texas and Missouri.

The sheriff's office said it believes Maunu left Park Rapids on Dec. 17 and spent some time in Detroit Lakes prior to the incident Dec. 18.

Authorities do not suspect foul play.
