Parental kidnapping suspect arrested in Ely
ELY, Minn. - Deputies from the U.S. Marshals Service, along with agents from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and deputies from the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office, located and arrested Christopher S. Campbell, 37, on a parental kidnapping warrant issued out of the state of Louisiana.
The warrant for Campbell was issued July 2 after an investigation by the Harahan (La.) Police Department determined Campbell had violated a court order by not returning his 5-year-old son to the child's mother following a weekend visitation. Campbell was not the custodial parent, but he was granted visitation with his son.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children issued a nationwide alert for the missing child, and the U.S. Marshals Service became involved. A tip was subsequently received that Campbell was hiding in Ely.
Campbell and his son were located Tuesday at a resort near Ely. Campbell was taken into custody without incident. The child was temporarily referred to child protective services until he can be safely reunited with his mother.
