Christine Stefani slipped behind the Bemidji defense, raced to a free ball and beat Bemidji goalie Casey Palmer with a shot under the crossbar 25 seconds into overtime to lift St. Cloud Apollo to a 2-1 girls soccer victory Saturday at the Middle School field.

The Lumberjacks and Eagles battled to a 1-1 draw in regulation, both goals coming in the first 18 minutes of play.

Each team manufactured a handful of scoring opportunities during the final 60 minutes of regulation but neither team could dent the scoreboard until Stefani connected in the first 5-minute overtime period.

"We did some good things on the field," said BHS coach Kelly Schoonover. "There really wasn't anything the girls did wrong. We had quite a few shots and good scoring opportunities but we just weren't able to connect.

"Some games you are on and some games you seem a step behind. I think on Saturday we were a step behind."

St. Cloud Apollo opened the scoring two minutes into the game when an Eagle crossing pass was accidently deflected into the BHS net by a Lumberjack defender.

The Jacks answered at the 18-minute mark. Erin Booth started the play with a pass to Josie Spry. Spry took the shot and, when it bounced off St. Cloud Apollo goalie Liz Lowry, Maari Stocker was in position to kick home the rebound.

The 1-1 tie stood through regulation but only 25 seconds into the first overtime the Eagles scored. Bemidji was unable to penetrate St. Cloud Apollo's defense in the final nine minutes of overtime and the Eagles (2-8-1) had their victory.

Bemidji (7-4) returns to action Monday when it hosts Grand Rapids at 4:30 p.m. Earlier this fall the Lumberjacks nipped the Thunderhawks 2-1 in Grand Rapids.
