Obituary: Lawrence Grimm

Lawrence "Larry" Grimm, 84, of Bemidji, died July 30, 2009 at his home.

Memorial services were held Aug. 4, 2009 at St. Philip's Catholic Church in Bemidji with Fr. Vincent Miller officiating. Burial of ashes was in Holy Cross Cemetery in Bemidji under the direction of Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji.

He was born Jan. 10, 1925 in Bemidji to William and Bertha (Dicaire) Grimm. He attended St. Philip's School and graduated from Bemidji High School in 1943. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1943 serving his country in Germany and France as a military policeman until 1946 after attaining the rank of corporal. He attended Bemidji State Teachers College.

He worked for Neilson Baking Co. from 1948-1953 and was co-owner of Manufacturing Wood Products during that same time period. He worked for Greenland Commissary from 1953-1954. He was the co-owner of the Gasthaus Restaurant, Bar and Pool Hall from 1962-1965. He owned and operated the Big Cheez Deli and Gourmet Food Shop which became The Gourmet House Catering and Foods from 1973-1977. He owned Sir Lawrence's Catering and Bar from 1979-1984.

He also worked as a sales representative for Cal Hegstrom Company which later became North Country Business Products from 1954-2005. He loved the people he worked with through those years.

He married Gladyce Haugen April 16, 1955 in Bemidji. He was a devout Catholic and a lifetime member of St. Philip's Parish serving as an usher for over 50 years. He was a past president of the St. Philip's School Board. He was a co-founder of the Beaver Gourmet Club whose activities included charitable fundraising for Opera Night at Bemidji State University and OktoberFest.

He was an original member of the Bemidji fish fry crew, was a member of the Bemidji Elks Club, American Legion and VFW for over 50 years. He loved to cook and loved to share this gift to help others.

His family, children, grandchildren and great-grandchild were the loves of his life. He dedicated his life to them.

He is survived by his children, Mary Ann (Jeff Beckwith) Grimm of Bemidji, James (Susan) Grimm of Bemidji, Kate (Glenn Thomas) Grimm of Roseville, Robyn (Burnie) Trepanier of Bemidji Linda (Wade) Carroll of St. Louis Park; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild and a sister, Helen Gregoire of Beaverton, OR.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a daughter, Elizabeth; a grandson, Joshua and a brother, Donald.
