Washington County prosecutors charged Nhan Lap Tran of Oakdale with six counts Wednesday.

Authorities say Tran shot at passing cars Monday evening, seemingly at random. Nine-year-old Devin Aryal was shot in the head and died.

The criminal complaint gives no motive. But it does say Tran was found with a 9mm handgun, and several live rounds of ammunition stuffed into his jacket pocket, a backpack and a fanny pack.

The complaint says Tran admitted he shot at vehicles, and that he reloaded at least once so he could keep firing.

He was assigned a public defender, who declined comment because she had no paperwork on the case.
