Northome School receives NASA grant

The Northome-Indus School Board met for the regular meeting Dec. 14.

The first order of business was to approve the agenda as presented and to approve the minutes, as presented, of the regular meeting of Nov. 9.

The board also voted to approve the district payment of: $161,810.72 for accounts payable invoices and $28,290.10 for extra payroll, as presented, for November.

Northome School Principal Paul van der Hagen, Indus Principal Bryan Brown, Christine Hultman, Linda Dreher and Derrick Gross were acknowledged as visitors before the following students were given recognition for thir accomplishments:

Indus Students of the Month: K-3 - Chase Steinbach, 4-6 - Kaitlyn Stavish, 7-9 - Anson Payne and 10-12 - Maria Lewis.

Northome Academic and Exemplary Students of the month were Academic: Sr. High - Carrie Carrigan, Jr. High - Jackie Pierson, Exemplary: Sr. High - Danielle Lindner and Jr. High - Michaela Williams.

The board the voted to:

• accept a $5,000 donation from Shirley Latterell to the Northome Scholarship Foundation

• approve a student teacher agreement between District 363 and BSU

• approve the hiring of Libby Wickum as the Mustang boys C-team basketball coach and Jody Wagner as Mustang girls C-team basketball coach

• approve the purchasing of the 2008 Suburban from Rydell Chevrolet

• accept the Cookware Grant from the Partnership for a Healthier America for Indus

• approve the hiring of Mike Feininger as the C team boys basketball coach and Nick Strandberg as the C Girls basketball coach at Indus

• approve the hiring of Caitlin Johnson as the Cheerleader Advisor for boys' basketball at Northome

• accept a $5,000 grant from the Blandin Foundation for our FIRST Robotics program

• accept the revised bread bid, to meet the requirements of the school lunch program.

Supt. Dr. Jerry Struss explained to the board the school levies and recent changes to the property tax system.

Approval for a request from the Northome music department for an overnight trip to the Concordia College Choral Festive in Moorhead Jan. 27-28 was given. The cost to the district would be transportation only.

Approval was then given in regards to the request from the boy's basketball program for a trip to southern Minnesota and Iowa during the summer. The cost to the district would be use of a bus and bus fuel.

The board voted unanimously to approve a request presented by Corrine Anderson to take the Indus freshman Social Studies class to Minneapolis Jan.17-18 for a research field trip. The cost to the district would be for transportation, substitute teacher cost, substitute para cost, cost for instruction at the Minnesota History Center, parking fee and one half the costs of the hotel rooms. Anderson has applied for grants and any grants received would offset any district costs.

Also approved was the request presented by Wade Sutton for a research trip for the Indus 12th grade class. The cost to the district would be one half of the hotel costs, plus transportation and substitute teacher costs for two days. The school will not cover the first day's lunch.

The second reading of Policy 505-Enrollment of Nonresident Students was discussed before it was approved before they voted to set the Pay 2012 Levy at the same level as the proposed levy which was $529,846.63.

The board voted to extend Dr. Struss's contract by one year to cover the 2012-2013 school year. With the proposed change to convert back some sick days to vacation days.

The Region I Joint Powers Ballots, School Board Committees and the Licensed Staff Negotiation -- There was a mediation session Nov. 22 were the discussed.

Board members discussed recent board committee meetings.

The board discussed making more use of the Instant Alert Program.

Reports were then given by Principals Brown and van der Hagen regarding recent activities at both schools before Dr. Struss reported on Indus' EPA wastewater permit, E-Rate, Indus computer network, student registration and upcoming financial presentations.

The next regular monthly board meeting will be held Jan. 11 at 8 p.m. at the Northome School Library.
