The Northern Dental Access Center recently received a gift of $2,500 from the Ruth Edevold Endowment for Excellence to help support its mission of providing a dental home for people in need.

The endowment honors the memory of the late Ruth Edevold, a regional community leader and founding executive director of the Northwest Minnesota Foundation.

Mary Marchel, one of the founding members for Northern Dental Access Center and the director of Beltrami County Health and Human Services, noted her friendship with Ruth Edevold from years ago.

"Her commitment to building bridges across agencies, to bringing the public and private sectors together to better serve the region and to encouraging leadership within our midst -- all are reflected in the Northern Dental Access Center," Marchel said.

"We spent a number of years building trust across diverse players, increasing awareness of the connection between oral health and overall community health, and building a strong business model that assures sustainability. I think Ruth would approve of this approach and she would acknowledge our success as an example of how community collaboration can work."

Marvin Edevold, the endowment's family adviser and Ruth Edevold's husband of more than 40 years, presented the gift to the Northern Dental Access staff and expressed his pride in this new community access clinic.

"This endowment is a great legacy for Ruth and our family," he said. "We're grateful to be able to recognize projects throughout the region that really make a difference -- these are things that we know Ruth would be really proud of."

He said that although daughter Jeanne Edevold Larson is the director of the clinic, the overall community collaboration and award-winning successes it has achieved merit this award on their own.

The Ruth Edevold Endowment for Excellence is one of many component funds of the Northwest Minnesota Foundation, designed to help leverage local giving to build community assets throughout northern Minnesota.
