North Dakota college student arrested in Minnesota murder case

VALLEY CITY, N.D. --  A Valley City State University student wanted on murder and attempted murder charges was arrested Tuesday at the university.

Over the weekend, Valley City police were contacted by the Minneapolis Police Department, which requested assistance in the investigation of a shooting that wounded one person and killed another in the Minneapolis department’s jurisdiction.

The two departments remained in contact as the investigation progressed. On Tuesday, Minneapolis police got a warrant for the arrest of Cedric Chappell Jr., 21, on one count of murder in the second degree and one count of attempted murder in the second degree.

Valley City police, with the assistance of the Barnes County Sheriff’s Office and the Stutsman County Narcotics Task Force, were able to locate Chappell, a student at Valley City State University, on campus grounds. He was taken into custody without incident.

On Tuesday, Minneapolis police detectives were on their way to Valley City to continue the shooting investigation.
