No extension for public comment on PolyMet mine
DULUTH -- The public comment period for the proposed PolyMet copper mine and processing center near Hoyt Lakes will end March 13, after 90 days, state and federal agency officials said Thursday.
Several environmental groups and others had petitioned the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and U.S. Forest Service – the agencies overseeing the environmental review – for an extra 90 days, to mid-June, because of the length of and complexity of the 2,169-page environmental review document.
So far, the agencies have received more than 19,000 comments, the most ever for a Minnesota project. But officials said there is no compelling need to extend the comment period.
