Nile Benson

Nile Benson, 80, of Blackduck, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at his home.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church in Blackduck with the Rev. Dan Heath officiating. A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Cease Family Funeral Chapel in Blackduck, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., and one hour prior to the service at Zion Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Blackduck.

The pallbearers will be Eric Gustafson, Karl Gustafson, Jim Schocker, John Schocker, Nayda Cheney and Becky Haberle.

Honorary pallbearers will be his bowling teams, the Blackduck Coffee Club and the Blackduck Lions.

He was born March 3, 1928, to Fred and Anna (Solberg) Benson in Blackduck. He was baptized in Zion Lutheran Church of Blackduck and has been an active member of the congregation ever since. He graduated from Blackduck High School in 1946. After graduating, he spent 13 years with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Forestry Division, while working on the family farm. He joined his father in the timber business. After working with different partners, he started his own business, Benson Timber and was involved with it until his sons bought the business in 1998. He was a member of the Blackduck Lions Club and was honored by the club for his service within the club and to the community at large. He served on the board of the Blackduck Senior Center and was a member of the Blackduck Agricultural Cooperative for 12 years. He enjoyed bowling, going to coffee with the Blackduck Coffee Club and attending the Blackduck Lions Club meetings.

He is survived by his sisters, Annabell Benson of Austin, Minn., and JoAnn Skumatz of Edina, Minn.; sons, Mark (Debra) Benson, Mike (Pat) Benson and Kurt (Darlene) Benson all of Blackduck; and daughter, Gail (Jack)Lidinsky of Sarasota, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel, in 2001; and his brother, Willie Benson, in 2002.
