Nile Benson, 81, of Blackduck, died Jan. 19, 2009 at his home.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Jan. 24 at Zion Lutheran Church in Blackduck with Rev. the Dan Heath officiating. Visitation was one hour prior to the services at the church. Cease Family Funeral Home of Blackduck assisted the family with arrangements.
Active pallbearers were Eric Gustafson, Karl Gustafson, Jim Schocker, John Schocker, Nayda Cheney and Becky Haberle.
Honorary pallbearers were his bowling teams, the Blackduck Coffee Club and the Blackduck Lions.
He was born March 3, 1928 in Blackduck to Fred and Anna (Solberg) Benson. He was baptized in Zion Lutheran Church of Blackduck and has been an active member of the congregation ever since. He graduated from Blackduck High School in 1946.
After graduating, he spent 13 years with the Minnesota DNR, Forestry Division, while working on the family farm. He joined his father in the timber business, after working with different partners for several years, he started Benson Timber and was involved with it until his sons bought the business in 1998.
He was a member of the Blackduck Lions Club and was honored by the club for his service within the club and to the community at large. He served on the board of the Blackduck Senior Center and was a member of the Blackduck Agricultural Cooperative for 12 years. He enjoyed bowling, going to coffee with the Blackduck Coffee Club and attending the Blackduck Lions Club meetings.
He is survived by three sons, Mark (Debra) Benson, Mike (Pat) Benson and Kurt (Darlene) Benson, all of Blackduck; a daughter, Gail (Jack) Lidinsky of Sarasota, FL and two sisters, Annabell Benson, Austin and JoAnn Skumatz, Edina.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel, in 2001 and a brother, Willie Benson, in 2002.
