BSU hosts gang awareness workshop
The cost is $25 and registration is available at minnesotagangs.evenbrite.com. Peace Officer Standards and Training credits are available for licensed peace officers who participate in the workshop.
The workshop is designed for teachers; police, corrections and probation officers; social workers and others who work with children. Topics will include gang definitions and statutes in Minnesota, reasons why children join gangs, factors that pre-dispose children to gang membership and the varying levels of gang involvement.Martin will provide a thorough overview of known gangs operating in Minnesota including Latino, White Supremacist and Native gangs.For details, call (612) 290-3487.
Wedin wins Life Saving awardST. PAUL — Minnesota State Patrol trooper Mike Wedin of Beltrami County was awarded with a Life Saving Award during the Minnesota Department of Public Safety awards, officials said in a press release Monday. The Life Saving Award is presented to members of the State Patrol who distinguish themselves by performing acts that prevent death of another person.Wedin was honored for monitoring a call from Beltrami County regarding a capsized boat and people in the water on Three Island Lake north of Bemidji. Wedin went out on the lake, located four people clinging to the side of a boat, deployed a raft and helped rescue the victims. Wedin is from the Grand Forks area.
Spa day for mothers and children plannedBEMIDJI — Bemidji’s Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a Mommy and Me Spa Day event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 11 at the Public Works Facility, 1351 Fifth St. NW.The event will feature manicures, nail art and refreshments. Appointments are 25 minutes and must be scheduled. Staff will contact participants the week of the program to schedule a time. The suggested age of children participants is 2 to 16. Walk MS event approachingBEMIDJI — The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Upper Midwest Chapter will host a Walk MS: Bemidji event at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Gillett Recreation Center at Bemidji State University.More than 220 walkers are expected to attend and help raise nearly $32,000. The event is one of 33 throughout Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota and western Wisconsin.Funds will support programs and services for more than 17,000 people with MS and their families in the Upper Midwest Chapter area and will fund new research to stop the disease and to restore lost function.Check in for the event is from 10 a.m. to noon and the walk begins at 1 p.m.For details or to volunteer, visit myMSwalk.org or call (800) 582-5296.
Caregivers to host educational courseBEMIDJI — Northwoods Caregivers is hosting a six-week educational course “Powerful Tools for Caregiver” on Wednesdays from 10-11:30 a.m. starting May 22 at the Bemidji PrimeWest Building, 3124 Hannah Ave.The course is aimed to help family caregivers take better care of themselves and improve self-confidence and problem-solving skills. Cost for the program is $25 and includes a copy of “The Caregiver Helpbook.” Scholarships are available upon request.
