Four different BSU players scored in double figures in the opening game of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference/Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

In his first season as head coach after coming to Bemidji State from Central College in Pella, Iowa, Boschee picked up a win in his first try. He got balanced scoring from a Beaver team that shot 49.1 percent from the field and created 19 Mountain Lion turnovers.

Junior Zach Noreen led the team with 16 points and five rebounds, while senior Dermaine Crockrell tallied 15 points and a team-high four assists. Noreen went 4 for 5 from behind the 3-point arc, leading the Beavers to a 10-for-18 shooting night from 3-point country.

Senior Mason Walters added 11 points and five rebounds, while senior Lance Rongstad, who hung up his cleats just six days ago as the starting quarterback for the BSU football team, scored 10 points and added a BSU-high three steals off the bench. Ten of the 12 players who saw minutes scored for the Beavers. BSU won the battle of the boards 31-27 and held UCCS to a 37.5 percent shooting game.

The teams traded buckets for the first five minutes of the opening frame, as BSU held a slim 18-15 advantage. The Beavers then ripped off a 12-4 run to take their first double-digit lead of the game at 30-19 with 8:13 remaining in the first half. Five different Beavers scored in the run, getting eight of those points from the bench.

The Mountain Lions would get as close as nine the rest of the half, as the Beavers owned the 40-28 lead heading into the locker room behind a team-high nine points from Walters and a 6-for-10 shooting performance by the team from 3-point land.

UCCS took the first four points of the second half and trailed 40-32 less than a minute in, but that would be as close as it got. A 3-pointer from Noreen started a 14-2 stretch for the Beavers that pushed the lead to 20. Noreen scored eight points in the run to guide the four different players that tallied a point.

The BSU lead got as high as 29.

The Beavers now go to battle with No. 5-ranked Metro State of Denver at 5 p.m. today at McCown Gymnasium in Winona.
