New ATV rules for Superior National Forest

DULUTH, Minn. -- More than six years in the works and now clear of court challenges, the Superior National Forest on Wednesday officially adopted new rules for ATVs and other motorized use across the forest.

Forest officials released eight new maps that are the backbone of the new plan, showing where ATVs and other motorized vehicles can and can't go away from main roads.

The new maps are available at www.fs.usda.gov/superior and at local Superior National Forest offices.

Many routes won't be posted with open or closed signs, so ATV riders are now expected to use the map as the primary tool to determine where they can and can't ride.

"We're working on getting the signs, the road number signs, updated. But the tool to find out whether they are open or not is the map from now on," said Kris Reichenbach, spokeswoman for the Superior National Forest.
