Nearly 1,600 fire calls to date in 2013

BEMIDJI — As Fire Prevention Week 2013 comes to a close, the Bemidji Fire Department reported it has responded to 1,589 calls for service this year.

In September, firefighters responded to 177 calls. Those calls included four structure fires (the huge blaze at the bible camp at Oak Hills Christian College among them), two vehicle fires, two wild land fires, 36 emergency medical calls, five motor vehicle crashes, two natural gas leaks, two carbon monoxide incidents, 21 fire alarm responses and 92 airport standbys.

Approximately $292,000 in property was lost due to fire last month, the department reported. An estimated $3,276,283 worth of property that was threatened by fire in 2013 was saved by the department; $1,177,572 was lost.

September had three "all call" firefighter pages. An average of 5.7 calls came in each day. On-duty and dorm firefighters handled 98.3 percent of the calls.

The department completed 227 hours of training in September on rural water supply, incident management, fire investigation, master stream operations, ground ladders, pipeline emergency response and full-scale aircraft drills.

Seventeen building inspections were conducted. Two fire safety presentations were held, 16 open burning permits were issued and one fire station tour was given last month.

The Bemidji Fire Department is hosting an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the station at 318 Fifth St. NW in Bemidji. .
