N.D. man gets six months in jail for neglecting horses, mules
BISMARCK – A Fargo man charged with neglecting dozens of horses and mules in Burleigh and Morton counties was sentenced Tuesday to six months in jail.
William Kiefer, a longtime investment adviser, pleaded guilty in August to nine misdemeanor counts of overworking, mistreating or abandoning animals.
Kiefer can serve the six-month sentence in jail or on electronic home monitoring. He must spend two years on supervised probation and during that time he cannot own any livestock.
He was also ordered to make donations of $750 in each county to a humane society or a horse rescue organization.
In January 2013, authorities seized more than 150 animals from Kiefer’s properties after finding nearly 100 dead animals.
