Nagle golf event benefits BSU men's hockey
BEMIDJI - Alumni, friends and fans of the Bemidji State University men's ice hockey program will gather at the Bemidji Town & Country Club Friday for the 15th annual Galen Nagle Memorial Golf Tournament.
Participants may choose either a 7:35 a.m. or 12:35 p.m. shotgun start. The $110 registration fee includes 18 holes of golf, tournament packets, door prizes, food and beverage on the course as well as a chance to win several course contests including a hole-in-one contest.
Following play, a dinner will be served, awards announced and attendees will have an opportunity to participate in a live auction. Auction items include a Matt Read autographed jersey, Boundary Waters excursion, a jersey autographed by the 2011-12 Philadelphia Flyers, Jimmy Buffet autographed guitar and a Beaver Hockey/Inn on Lake Superior ticket and hotel package for four.
All proceeds from the Texas scramble tournament featuring BSU greats such as Bryan Grand, Joel Otto, Andrew Murray and Matt Read and auction will directly benefit the BSU's men's hockey program and the endowment fund set up in Nagle's name.
"It means a lot for me to be able come back to Bemidji, a community that has done so much for me, and help the Bemidji State hockey team," said 2011 BSU graduate and current member of the Philadelphia Flyers Matt Read.
"An event like this helps generate scholarship funds to afford young hockey players the opportunity to gain a scholarship and attend Bemidji State University, while it allows the program to continue to compete in the WCHA and on a national level."
The tournament began in 1998 in an effort to build the Galen Nagle Endowment Fund.
Nagle was a goaltender for the Beavers from 1980-84 and went on to serve as a coach and teacher in Minnesota for several years before losing his life to cancer Oct. 18, 1994 at the age of 34.
Nagle was a member of the historic 1984 national championship team at BSU. He earned an 8-1 to cap the perfect 31-0 season.
"Galen exemplified Beaver hockey," said former BSU men's hockey coach and athletic director Bob Peters. "Hard work, dedication and loyalty were inherent to his character, and through his efforts he became a vital part of our team."
Nagle, a native of Baudette, graduated from BSU in 1984 and was a 1980 graduate of Bemidji High School.
