Moorhead sweeps Bemidji baseball team in doubleheader
Bemidji's hopes for a home game in Monday's first round of the Section 8-3A playoffs were severely wounded Thursday as the Lumberjacks were swept 4-3 and 6-3 at Moorhead.
BHS will have one more opportunity to collect section points as it heads to St. Cloud Apollo today for a 1:30 p.m. game. The section coaches will have a conference call tonight to determine the 8-3A seedings.
The top four seeds will be at home for Monday's playoff openers.
In Thursday's first game Moorhead took advantage of two Bemidji errors to score the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
Chris Beach started the rally when his drive to the outfield bounced off Corey Rutledge's glove for a two-base error. An out later Zach Quaife hit a shot to third but Mitchell Hendricks' throw to first was off target and Beach raced home with the game-winner.
The Lumberjacks opened the scoring with two in the third when Hendricks was hit by a pitch, Collin Leif singled and Tyler Follis ripped a 2-run double.
Moorhead answered in its half of the stanza as Aaron Wilmer walked, Cody Rahman delivered a triple and Chance Bitzer belted a home run to left.
BHS tied the game in the fifth. Jeremiah Graves walked to begin the inning and Hendricks singled. The runners advanced on Leif's sacrifice bunt and Graves scored courtesy of a balk.
Moorhead wasted opportunities to score in the fifth and sixth innings as the Spuds stranded the bases loaded in each.
Bemidji's luck ran out in the seventh, however, as Moorhead took advantage of the two BHS miscues to plate the game-winner.
Follis had a double and single to pace Bemidji's attack. Ryan Stevens went the distance on the mound. He yielded nine hits and five walks while fanning six.
Bemidji took the early lead in the second game as Cody Jenkins drilled a pitch over the left-field fence for solo home run in the second inning.
The Lumberjacks, however, could not enjoy their prosperity for long as Moorhead's Marshall Dalziel matched Jenkins' feat in the lower second and later in the stanza Tyson Schoenborn singled home Seth Blaser who had walked and stolen second.
Moorhead upped its lead to 3-1 in the fourth on a double and a wide throw trying to nail the lead runner following a sacrifice bunt.
BHS tied the game with two runs in the fifth as Graves singled, Hendricks walked, Leif doubled and Zach Solheim singled home Hendricks.
Dom Hayle, who was pinch running for Leif, was out at the plate trying to score on the play.
Once again, the home team promptly regained the momentum as a walk, bunt and double resulted in a run and a 4-3 lead in the lower fifth.
Moorhead added two insurance tallies on four singles in the bottom of the sixth.
Schoenborn limited the Jacks' offense to seven hits, two of them by Leif. Trent Baker went the route on the Bemidji mound.
