Alyshia Moe of Bemidji capped her first appearance at the National High School Rodeo with a third-place finish in the barrel racing competition.

Moe, a freshman at Bemidji High School, posted the ninth-best time (17.535) in Saturday's final and finished with a three-run cumulative time of 52.601.

Rachel Primm of Washoe Valley, Nev. was the overall barrel racing champion with a time of 51.952. NaLynn Cline of Bernalillo, N.M. was second at 52.269.

At the start of the national rodeo 178 cowgirls were competing in the event.

"It was really fun," Moe said. "Of course I wanted to win but finishing third is better than I thought I would do. I'm happy with how Cheetah (her horse) and I finished."

Moe and Cheetah earned the top seed heading into the final after posting qualifying times of 17.371 and 17.695 and a cumulative time of 35.066.

"My run on Saturday night wasn't as fast as it could have been because my first turn wasn't too good," Moe said. "But Cheetah did an excellent job and I'm happy with third place."

Moe also competed in the pole bending competition but did not make the final. A 5-second penalty for bumping a pole during her second qualifying run proved costly.

"We had a thunderstorm the night before that race and the ground was really muddy," Moe said. "Cheetah got stuck in the ground and we hit the pole.

"But I'm really happy with how we did," Moe continued. "It was fun and I know I want to go back next year."
