MNA Better Newspaper Contest: Pioneer gets two awards
The Bemidji Pioneer received two awards Thursday at the Minnesota Newspaper Association's annual convention in Bloomington.
In the MNA's Better Newspaper Contest, the Pioneer took second place in sports reporting for dailies up to 10,000 in circulation. Judges noted the paper's local content and lauded its coverage of events "that usually get ignored, like swimming and Nordic skiing."
The Pioneer also earned a second-place award for typography and design for dailies up to 10,000. Judges said the paper's headline fonts, its use of photos and attention to both content and quality.
The Timberjay of Ely won the traveling Mills Trophy for best weekly newspaper based on awards received.
The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead won the Vance Trophy for the best daily.
