Minneapolis officer loses finger in bite attack
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Minneapolis man is charged with assault after authorities say he bit off the finger of a police officer.
Authorities say police were responding to a mental health emergency Tuesday when 54-year-old James Curtis Dawkins attacked them. The complaint says Dawkins punched and kicked the officers, then bit down on Officer Chad Meyer's finger through his glove.
The complaint says Meyer screamed in pain, but Dawkins continued to bite down until Meyer's finger was bitten off at the first knuckle.
The bitten off portion of Meyer's finger was found in his glove. Doctors were unable to surgically reattach it, leaving Meyer permanently disfigured.
Officers used a Taser to subdue Dawkins. His first court appearance is set for Thursday, and it was unclear if he had an attorney.
