The Department of Natural Resources received more than 23,000 applications for the 6,000 available licenses.

Lottery winners can purchase their licenses from license agents, online or by phone. Winners will also be notified by mail within the next few weeks.

Any licenses that remain unsold by the Oct. 24 early season deadline, or by the late hunting-and-trapping season deadline Nov. 15, will be made available first to unsuccessful lottery applicants, then to other hunters.

This will be Minnesota's first wolf hunt since the animals came off the endangered list. The state has set a quota of 400, out of a population estimated at around 3,000.
