ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — U.S. Rep. John Kline of Minnesota has a GOP endorsement challenger who says he's more conservative than the six-term incumbent congressman.

David Gerson of South St. Paul kicked off his bid Monday at a state Capitol news conference. Gerson lost to Kline in the 2012 Republican primary in the mostly suburban district south of St. Paul.

Rather than another primary challenge, Gerson is seeking the endorsement of GOP activists in the 2nd Congressional District, and says he won't run in the primary without it. Gerson says he's happy to accept the tea party label, and describes himself as a better choice than Kline for Republicans whose top priorities are limited government, free markets and individual rights.

Kline's campaign spokesman did not immediately comment. A handful of Democrats are also running.
