BRAINERD - Morgan Miller shot 86 on the par-71 Preserve layout and that effort helped the Bemidji girls golf team claim fifth at Thursday's 16-team Brainerd Invitational.
Today finds the Lumberjacks back in the Brainerd area for an 18-hole meet at The Pines.
"We played very well, especially considering that we haven't played many rounds on this course," said BHS coach Jeff Nelson. "Our main problem was putting but that will happen when you are on a course you are not familiar with."
Pequot Lakes is familiar with the nuances of the Preserve and it was no surprise that it won the meet with a team round of 333. Grand Rapids was second with 342 while the Jacks shot 353.
Joining Miller with rounds in the 80s were Katelin Craft and Morgan Williams who each shot 88.
Kelsey Isaacson finished at 91, Megan Dondelinger at 95 and Savanna Hanson at 99.
Miller started on the back nine and shot 46. The freshman fared much better on her second nine (the front) as she finished with a 40.
"I started triple-double-triple but after that I played well and I came out better than I thought I would," Miller said. "On my second nine I was able to calm down and by then I was used to the speed of the greens.
"We didn't have a chance to practice before the round so it took us some time to get used to the greens," she added.
Today's girls tournament begins at 9 a.m. At 2 p.m. the course will host a boys tournament and Bemidji is among the teams entered in that competition.
