Mildred L. Larson Ph.D. age 89 of Bagley, MN died on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at the Cornerstone Nursing and Rehab Center in Bagley, MN.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, April 13, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at the Calvary Evangelical Free Church in Bagley, MN with Reverend Rick Moore officiating. There will be no reviewal or visitation. Interment will be in the Solway Cemetery in Solway, MN. at a later date. The Cease Family Funeral Home of Bagley assisted with the arrangements.

Millie was born near St. Lawrence, SD, on March 29, 1925 as the third child of John and Alma Larson. In 1935 the family moved to Solway, MN. She graduated from Bemidji High School in 1943 and that same year left for Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL, and received a BA in English in 1947. She taught 6th grade in a Wheaton public school for two years before beginning her life time career with Wycliffe Bible Translators.

As a child Millie made a personal commitment to Jesus Christ and as a teenager a commitment to serve in missions. While at college she dedicated her life to service for the bibleless peoples of the world. To this end she trained in linguistics at the University of Oklahoma during the summers and attended Colombia Bible College Graduate school before spending two years in Mexico. In 1952 she was assigned to work in Peru, SA.

From 1952-75 her primary responsibility was for the linguist, literacy and translation work among the Aguaruna peoples of northern Peru. She worked with a team of WBT member. During that time they were able to study the language, establish an effective Bilingual Education program, and translate the New Testament and other materials into the Aguaruna language. The published NT was presented to the people in 1975. She completed an MA in linguistics at the University of Michigan in 1958.

From 1975-1979 she was academic coordinator for the Latin America Area and served as a translation consultant. She completed a Ph.D. in Humanities through studies at Hartford Seminary and the University of Texas in Arlington in 1978. She also wrote a book about experiences among the Aguaruna (Treasure in Clay Pots), a linguistic book (Functions of Reported Speech) and co-authored a book called Bilingual Education in Peruvian Amazon.

In 1980 she was asked to serve at International Translation Coordinator. She made trips to do consultant training workshops in various countries, assisted in the training of new members and wrote a textbook for training programs (Meaning-based Translation). This book is used at Universities in training courses throughout the world and has also been published in Spanish, Indonesian, Russian and Arabic.

From 1986-1989 she was Vice-president for Personnel. From 1990-1995 she was Academic Coordinator for the Asia Area and Director of the training school in Singapore. From 1975 until 1995 she was a member of the International Board of Directors. In 1995 she retired from WBT but continued working as a volunteer until 2000 when she moved to the Villages of Bagley in Bagley, MN. and most recently to the Cornerstone Residence.

Millie is survived by one brother Glenn (Celia) Larson of Solway, MN

Sister-in-law Bibba Larson of Seal Beach, CA

She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 brothers Maurice, Ernest and Lester
