Middle River man killed in collision near Fergus Falls

FERGUS FALLS, Minn. - A 24-year-old man from Middle River, Minn., died of injuries sustained in a head-on collision between a pickup and a semi near Fergus Falls on Sunday, the Minnesota State Patrol said this morning.

Richard L. Smith, 24, was driving the pickup when it crossed the center line of Highway 59 about 1:27 p.m. and struck the semi head-on, the patrol said. Smith's name was released this morning after immediate relatives had been notified.

The accident happened about 1:27 p.m. on Highway 59 about three miles north of Fergus Falls, the report said.

The driver of the semi, David Bjorgo, 53, of Pelican Rapids, was not injured.
