Mercedes Rainey, "Thunderheart Woman," 5, of Red Lake, died Thursday, April 16, 2009, at the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.

Traditional funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Red Lake Center in Red Lake. A wake will begin at 2 p.m. Monday at the Red Lake Center and continue until the time of the service. Burial will be at the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Red Lake under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji.

Pallbearers will be Rob May, Rowdy May, Cody Morrison, Marcus Rainey, Steve Rainey, Kenny Hanson, Rob Lussier, Vincent Graves and Brandon Graves.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jon Parkhurst, Dylan "Dubb" Cook, Dennis Robertson, Valeen Graves, Misty Roy, Shannon Lussier, Sherrel Graves, Tiffany Defoe, Josette Rainey, Wyona Mountain, with alternates Brittany Blackbear, and Baby Sharon Lussier.

She was born Jan. 30, 2004, to Fawnda Parkhurst and Marcel Rainey in Bemidji. She loved spending time with her brothers, and twin cousins. She enjoyed coloring, singing, dancing, listening to powwow music and fixing her hair. She was a very happy girl, always full of energy, who loved to laugh, and made everyone around her happy.

She is survived by her mother; brothers, Shawn Parkhurst and Kevin Robertson Jr.; special aunt, Mariah Graves; maternal grandparents, Nola Parkhurst and Gary Lussier; paternal grandparents, Denise Rainey and Juan Diaz; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father; an aunt; great-grandparents, Murphy and Mary Louise Parkhurst and Doreen "Cookie" Rainey.
