MEN'S HOCKEY: Ferris State torches BSU 8-0 in playoff opener
BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — The BSU men’s hockey team backed into the WCHA playoffs after losing six of their final eight games in the regular season.
And now the Beavers have their backs up against the wall.
Ferris State exploded for eight goals — including four in the third period — to rout Bemidji State 8-0 in Game 1 of their best-of-three WCHA first-round playoff series Friday night at Ewigleben Ice Arena. The puck is scheduled to drop for Game 2 at 6:07 p.m. tonight. Should the Beavers force a Game 3 it will begin at 4:07 p.m. Sunday.
The loss was BSU’s worst since falling to Minnesota-Duluth 12-0 on Dec. 7, 2002. It’s the Beavers’ worst-ever loss in WCHA play.
The Bulldogs, who came into the game as the top seed in the tournament and ranked No. 7 in the nation, saw six different players score and at 12 different players record at least a point.
Ferris (26-9-3) scored two times in the first, twice in the second and four times in the third to complete the rout.
Justin Buzzeo scored twice, as did Kyle Schempp; while Travis White, Cory Kane, Kenny Babinski and Andy Huff also needed goals for Ferris.
White had three points on the night, with three assists, as did Kane, who had a goal and three assists.
The Beavers (10-20-7) actually outshot the Bulldogs 26-23 but couldn’t make anything of their shots on goal.
Almost all the Bulldogs goals came when they dumped the puck behind BSU goalie Andrew Walsh and fed it to a player in front of the net for a redirect.
Walsh gave up all eight goals before he was finally relieved after giving up goal No. 8 to Huff at the 13:49 mark of the third period; Andrew Wilkins played the final 6:11 but didn’t face any shots.
CJ Motte earned the shutout for FSU with 26 saves.
If there were any bright spots for the Beavers, its that they were able to hold Ferris State scoreless on three power play attempts; last weekend Bowling Green scored four power play goals on BSU’s top-10 penalty kill unit.
