OMAHA, Neb. – The Bemidji State men’s hockey team escaped Omaha with its stellar record intact.
David Boehm scored two goals, Ben Kinne added another on the power play and the Beavers weathered a five-minute major penalty late in the third period to top the Mavericks 3-2.
It was the Beavers 1,000th win in program history. It also makes them 5-0-3 in their last eight meetings in Omaha.
“It was a big weekend,” BSU head coach Tom Serratore said. “I thought the guys won in gritty fashion again tonight. Their backs against the wall and still pulled it out.”
In Friday’s game, it was Bemidji State who battled back from a two-goal deficit to claim the tie.
Saturday night at CenturyLink Center, the Beavers (2-1-1, 1-1-0 WCHA) set the tone with the first two goals.
BSU took advantage of a Brian Cooper boarding penalty midway through the first period to score its first power-play goal of the season.
Ben Kinne got the score just 34 seconds into the man-advantage – with an assist from Cory Ward and Jordan George – and put BSU up 1-0.
The Beavers held on to the lead despite being outshot 7-5 in the period.
In the second period, the Beavers scored quickly.
BSU went up 2-0 just 1:37 into the second period when David Boehm went in front of the net and tricked the puck in past UNO goaltender Anthony Stolarz. Jeff Jubinville and Brance Orban got credit on the assists.
But the Mavs (2-3-1, 0-1-1 WCHA) showed some resiliency of their own, scoring two goals in the second frame to get right back into it.
James Polk got the puck past BSU goaltender Andrew Walsh at the 6:17 mark to cut the Beavers lead to 2-1.
Seven minutes later, Josh Archibald tallied his third goal of the season to tie the game. He had the puck in the zone and BSU defenseman Brady Wacker took him out.
However, Archibald got the shot off anyway and the puck somehow found its way under Walsh.
Adding insult to injury, Wacker was whistled for a tripping penalty on the play and was sent to the box.
The Beavers did get a break shortly after Wacker’s penalty when the Mavericks had too many men on the ice.
Neither team scored on their power play chances, and the game remained tied until late in the second period.
David Boehm’s second goal of the night – with 1:39 to go in the second – proved to be the difference.
Boehm collected a fortuitous bounce in the slot in front of Stolarz and the Beavers took a 3-2 lead into the second intermission.
In the third frame, the Mavs replaced Stolarz with John Faulkner. The Beavers didn’t manage to score on Faulkner, but the Mavs couldn’t get anything past Walsh, either, despite getting a 7-6 edge in shots.
Both teams struggled with penalties in the third period, but neither could take advantage.
Perhaps the biggest chance for UNO to tie the game came at the 4:27 mark.
BSU defenseman Matt Prapavessis received a game misconduct and five-minute major penalty for a check from behind.
He was sent off, and the Mavs should have had a five-minute man-advantage.
However, three minutes into the penalty, UNO’s Ryan Walters was called for hooking and the teams skated four-on-four for two minutes.
Neither team scored, and the Mavs had a short 17-seconds power play following the Walters penalty.
Walters came out of the box and actually got a shot off, but Walsh made a kick save to deny the goal and keep BSU’s lead intact.
In all, the teams combined for eight penalties in the third period.
Aside from Boehm’s two goals, Brance Orban got two assists on the night to increase his point total to three on the year.
Walsh made 25 saves for BSU in goal while Stolarz made 10 for UNO. Faulkner made six in relief.
The Beavers are off next weekend but return to the ice Nov. 9-10 for a conference series at Colorado College. The Tigers are 3-3 after being swept by Cornell this weekend.
