MEN'S HOCKEY: Bemidji State opens best-of-three WCHA playoffs at Ferris State
BEMIDJI — The playoff portion of the season for the BSU men’s hockey team begins Friday when the Beavers travel to Big Rapids, Mich. to take on Ferris State in their best-of-three WCHA series.
Game times for Friday and Saturday are 6:07 p.m. CDT. If a third game is necessary, faceoff will be at 4:07 p.m. Sunday.
BSU and Lake Superior State both finished tied for eighth in the WCHA standings with 24 league points. Both teams were swept over the weekend as BSU fell at Bowling Green 5-3 and 5-2 while Ferris State posted a pair of 2-1 wins over Lake Superior.
Ferris State is the top seed after finishing with 42 league points. Minnesota State was a close second with 41.
Alaska and Bowling Green each tallied 30 points but Alaska was awarded the third playoff seed based on the tie-breakers. Finishing fifth was Michigan Tech with 29 points while Anchorage was sixth with 28 and Northern Michigan seventh with 27.
During the regular series Ferris State won three of four games against BSU, sweeping the Beavers 5-3 and 5-4 in overtime in early November on its home ice and splitting in Bemidji a month ago.
This weekend’s other playoff series see No. 2 Mankato entertaining No. 6 Northern Michigan, No. 3 Alaska hosting No. 6 Anchorage and No. 4 Bowling Green welcoming No. 5 Northern Michigan.
The survivors of this week’s playoff action will head to Grand Rapids, Michigan March 21-22 for the WCHA semifinals and final.
