MEN'S BASKETBALL: Bemidji State hangs on, edges Augustana 69-67

BEMIDJI – Lance Rongstad’s 3-pointer with 2:29 to go broke a 61-61 tie and helped the Bemidji State basketball team snap its two-game losing streak, as the Beavers defeated Augustana 69-67 Friday night in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.

After a slow first half for both teams offensively, the Beavers (7-5, 5-4 NSIC) trailed the Vikings (9-3, 5-3) at halftime, 30-27.

But BSU heated up in the second half, and after trailing by as many as five, the Beavers went on a 9-0 run to take a four-point lead of their own with 15:25 to play.

From there, the Beavers never trailed again, although the Vikings tied it twice – once at 59 with 5:07 to go and again at 61 with 2:47 left.

However, Rongstad drained a three from the top of the arc to put the Beavers up 64-61 and Bemidji State held on for the two-point win.

Dremaine Crockrell and Mason Walters led the Beavers with 14 points apiece while Michael Farrington added 11 points. Walters added 10 rebounds for a double double. Rongstad scored seven points.

The Vikings also had three players in double figures, led by guard Cameron McCaffery, who netted 23 points. Alex Richter had 15 points and Daniel Jansen added 10.

The Beavers return to the court at 6 p.m. today for a game against Wayne State, weather permitting. The Wildcats routed Minnesota Crookston 66-41 Friday.
