With the shot clock winding down and the score tied at 62 with 25 seconds left in the game, Michael Farrington knocked the ball away from LaTroy Wright and into the backcourt.

Farrington dove for the ball, but Wright recovered and the 5-on-4 advantage led to a 3-point attempt for Ty Bauschek, who was fouled by Lance Rongstad on the shot. Bauschek’s made two free throws, which turned out to be the difference in the game.

“It is hard to fault the effort on the play,” Bemidji State head coach Mike Boschee said. “Considering the shot clock and how far away they were, they probably would not have gotten a shot. Mike dove for it, which is good effort, but he probably should have just guarded him.”

After falling behind by four points, the Beavers tied the game at 60 with 2:16 remaining following a pair of baskets from Noreen.

Following Bauschek’s two free throws, BSU took a timeout with seven seconds remaining.

Dermaine Crockrell inbounded the ball and got the ball back, but had it poked away from him behind the 3-point arc. Rongstad recovered and called for a timeout, but there were only 0.2 seconds remaining and BSU was unable to complete an alley-oop on the inbounds play and the clock expired.

Crockrell, leading scorer for the Beavers this season, was held scoreless Saturday on 0-for-6 shooting.

“Wayne is a good defensive team,” Boschee said. “They had some guys who were athletic enough to stay in front of him and make plays. It is tough to win a basketball game when your best players cannot make plays for you, but give Wayne State credit, they had guys who could guard him and they did a nice job.”

Zach Noreen scored the first seven points of the game for the Beavers as they jumped ahead to a 7-4 lead after three minutes of play.

Noreen finished with 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting.

A three-pointer from Ryan Rolfzen gave the Wildcats its first lead of the game at 26-23 with 5:49 remaining in the first half.

Thanks to five consecutive points from Mason Walters and a jumper from Rongstad, BSU closed the first half on a 7-0 run to build a 33-28 halftime lead.

Walters finished with a double-double with 16 points and ten rebounds.

Three 3-pointers from Rongstad and one from Jason Edwards gave the Beavers a 47-36 lead with 15:19 left to play.

Rongstad led all scorers with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting and five made threes.

The Wildcats answered with a 17-6 scoring run that was capped off by a jumper from Bauschek to tie the game at 53.

Derrell Williams led the Wildcats with 16 points on 6-for-8 shooting and also pulled down a team-high five rebounds.
