Mavs rally tops BSU women

The Bemidji State women's basketball team fell 77-73 to Minnesota State-Mankato Friday night on the Mavericks' court.

The Beavers (5-11, 2-10 NSIC) and the Mavericks traded leads until the Mavericks took a 69-68 lead with 4:40 remaining and held on.

Bemidji State was unable to get the win despite shooting 53 percent from the floor. Mankato took advantage of 20 Beaver turnovers.

Both offenses had tremendous success on offense in the first half. The Beavers took their largest lead at 31-18 when senior center Colleen McKay made a basket with 9:26 left in the half.

The Mavericks finished by outscoring the Beavers 24-13, but Bemidji State still held a 44-42 lead at the half.

Mankato scored the first two baskets of the second half and the squads exchanged leads until the final five minutes.

The Beavers took their final lead at 68-66 with 5:19 left in the game when freshman center Kate Warmack made a two-point shot.

McKay led the Beavers with 14 points. Sophomore center Jessie Althoff and sophomore guard Shannon Thompson each finished with 13. Thompson made three 3-pointers and grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

Bemidji State returns to action tonight at 6 p.m. when it travels to Marshall to play Southwest Minnesota State.
