Marvel Fern Rabe Wintersteen

Marvel Fern Rabe Wintersteen, 89, of Bemidji, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008, at Good Samaritan Care Center in Blackduck.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Aardahl Lutheran Church in Bemidji with the Rev. Kent Dudley and the Rev. Linda G. Tenneson officiating. Visitation will be held from 1-3 p.m. Sunday at Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the spring in Greenwood Cemetery in Bemidji under the direction of Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji.

Pallbearers will be Albert Sadek, Curtis Beck, Dan Sadek, Terry Wintersteen, Mike Sadek and Theresa Rabe Templin.

Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren Suzie, Debbie, Vicky and Jodi.

She was born Dec. 23, 1919, to Albert and Alice Smith in Laverne, Minn. She moved to the Bemidji area as a young woman with her family and worked as a babysitter. She married Lloyd "Bud" Rabe Dec. 27, 1938, in Bemidji. To help support her family, she did remodeling work, painting and wallpapering in area homes.

She worked for more than 20 years as a cashier for Toombs' IGA, which later became Steven's IGA. Her husband, Bud, died Feb. 16, 1969. In 1971, she began work as a surgery technician at a Bemidji hospital. She received an employee of the month award during her work at the hospital. She married Clarence "Kiddo" Wintersteen in November 1971. She retired in 1984. They wintered in Arizona and Texas. Her husband, Clarence, died Aug. 29, 2000.

She was a member of the Moose Lodge, where she served as a senior regent; the Eagle's Auxiliary where she was commended as a "Grandmother of the Year;" Carr Lake Homemaker's Circle and First Presbyterian Church, where she served with the Ladies Circle. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed dancing, fishing, cooking, embroidery and crocheting.

She is survived by her children, Alice (Albert) Sadek of Bemidji, Irene Beck of Bemidji, Bill (Rita) Rabe of Blackduck and Donald (Eileen) Wintersteen of Bemidji; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands; parents; brother, Vernon Smith; sisters, Ethel Arnholtz and Adeline Carter; a grandson and a son-in-law.
