‘Marv’ Hanson dies at age 60

BEMIDJI — Marvin “Marv” Hanson, founder of The Marvelous Fish House, died Friday at the age of 60.

Originally from Red Lake, Hanson was dedicated to improving the lives of American Indians through his various business enterprises. He worked as vice president of Grand Casino and as director of New Beginnings, a job placement program.

In May, he opened the Marvelous Fish House in a building on the south end of Bemidji that once housed the Mexican-themed El Mariachi restaurant. Hanson said the goal of opening the American Indian-themed restaurant was to bring something new to the area’s dining culture, and to bring jobs to its American Indian population. The restaurant served fish and wild rice from sources in Red Lake.

In November, slightly more than six months after it opened, the restaurant closed.

“It’s a shame,” Hanson said at the time. “We had a great summer, we created jobs for people that otherwise would not have been given a chance and we had a good product from the local area. I gave it all I had and it just didn’t happen.”

Funeral arrangements are with Chilson Chapel Funeral Home in Winsted. A date for funeral services is yet to be arranged, Chilson officials said Monday.
