Jan. 7, 1929-Feb. 9, 2008
Marlys E. Carter, 79, of Detroit Lakes, died Saturday, February 9, 2008 at St. Mary's Care Center, Detroit Lakes.
Marlys Elaine (Olson) Carter was born January 7, 1929 in Litchville, N.D., to Johnnie and Irene (King) Olson. Marlys spent her childhood and the majority of her life as a resident of Jamestown, N.D.
As a young adult, she worked at Danette Café while in high school. She was active in sorority and events at Jamestown High School. Marlys was in the class of 1947, which established the youth canteen at the Armory. It was a place for the youth to drop in and also a dance hall for many years. Marlys married Arland Carter Dec. 18, 1947. He died in 1992.
Marlys worked as secretary/bookkeeper/receptionist in several places through the years, including Dr. Schuck's Clinic, DuPu-Sorkness Clinic, Elks Lodge No. 995, Don Wilhelm Inc., Farm Engineering "Wedg-Cor" and Jamestown Aviation, all in Jamestown. Shortly after Arland's death in 1992 she volunteered at the Jamestown Hospital Auxiliary, as chairperson for Tel-A-Care and secretary for the auxiliary, and worked for the front desk. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Jamestown and was involved in The Steven Ministry and Youth Ministry.
In 2001 Marlys became a vagabond traveler with the Sampson household, when she either visited or physically moved to be near the family. In each locality she found her niche in volunteer work, always being quickly well known and loved. She was always a statement in herself by just her mere presence. In February 2005 she moved to Detroit Lakes, where she continued to do volunteer work at the St. Mary's Hospital health desk.
Marlys is survived by her daughter Julie (Dr. Steven) Sampson of Detroit Lakes as well as two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
A private family service will be held in the spring. Those wanting to share memories and condolences are invited to use the funeral home's online messages of sympathy section at www.westkjos.com.
