Marland "Marly" Winans

Marland Duane Winans, 80, died August 27, 2013 with his love and family by his side.

He was born to the late Louis and Alice (Erickson) Winans on August 31, 1932 at Ulen, Minnesota. Marly never graduated but like most men of that time, went to service in March 1951 to serve in the United State Navy. After boot camp, he served on the U.S.S. Lake Champlin, an aircraft carrier, as an engine mechanic crew leader, when the Navy was changing from prop driven to jet driven planes. He was discharged in 1955. Marly married Carol Axdahl on February 16, 1957, and they lived a short time in New Brighton, MN before moving to Monterey Bay area in California where he started Viking Construction, a very successful contracting business. The family moved to Bemidji in 1976.

Marly is survived by his wife, Carol Winans of Bemidji and his son, Marlo Winans, also of Bemidji; sister, Joyce (Marlin) Dullum of New Brighton, MN and brother, Jerry Winans and special friend, Edna (Snokkie) Jetvig both of Dilworth, MN and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents and his oldest son, Monte D. Winans, of Anchorage, AK, brother, Charles Winans, Remer, MN and Roger Winans, Palm Springs, CA.

A Celebration of Life will be held 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, September 6, 2013 at Marlo Winans home, Bemidji for family and friends.

Memorial Services will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Bethel Lutheran Church, 5232 Irvine Ave. NW, Bemidji, MN with Rev. Mark Kindem officiating. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

At a later date, Marly’s ashes will be set free in private services.
