She was born Nov. 21, 1926 to Ole and Bertha (Kvamme) Hvamstad in Donaldson, Minn. She attended country school in Badger, Minn. As a child she played piano at barn dances with her father as early as the age of 6.

When she was 12, her family split up after her mother's death, but reunited in later years. At the age of 13, while at the Sheltering Arms Orphanage with her sister Mildred, she played on the KSTP radio station with Slim Jim at the Nicollet Hotel in Minneapolis after he saw her win a talent show at the orphanage.

She married Olaf Arthur Spangrud Oct. 23, 1943, at the family homestead in Shotley, Minn. They lived in Minneapolis until the birth of their first child. In 1944, they moved to the family farm and they farmed there until 1970.

Her favorite place to be was on the family farm, surrounded by family and friends, playing the piano, singing, cooking and enjoying life. She also enjoyed her outings with her friend and neighbor, Bill Hoffmann.

She is survived by her children, Eric (Barb) Spangrud of Maple Grove, Minn., Leif Spangrud of Hamel, Minn., Karen (Conway) Reese of Mound, Minn., Christine (Larry) Wehus of Pennington, Ingrid (Don) Kemmer of Bemidji and Sonja (John) Florhaug of Bemidji; a daughter-in-law, Barb Spangrud of Kelliher; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brothers, Elder Hvamstad and James Gregerson; a sister, Mildred Hoffmann; and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, in 1996; her father, in 1961; her mother, in 1938; a son, Thor Spangrud, in 2006; a grandson in 1995; four brothers, two sisters and 1 son-in-law.
