Margaret “Maggie” McDermott

Margaret “Maggie” McDermott, 87, of Grand Forks, ND passed away Saturday, May 25, 203 in Altru Hospital in Grand Forks.

Maggie was born June 10, 1925 in Grand Forks, ND. She was one of 5 children raised by her loving mother, Catherine Benson. She graduated from St. James Academy in Grand Forks and was valedictorian of her class. Maggie attended the University of North Dakota and was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She was employed with First National Bank, where she met her best friend and husband, Bernie McDermott. They were married on September 27, 1947 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Grand Forks. Maggie and Bernie enjoyed 54 years of marriage together. Bernie preceded her in death on September 28, 2001.

She was involved in many activities throughout her life and was a passionate Bridge player and an avid reader, especially poetry. The things that were most important in her life were her Catholic faith and her family. Maggie and Bernie enjoyed life in Grand Forks as well as summers at their lake home, their “Heaven on Earth” in Bemidji, MN. They also loved their winters in Mesa, AZ. Maggie was dedicated mother to her 5 children, Anne (Craig) Cooper, Sheila (Doug) Hiney, Kathy (Terry) Daucsavage, Brian (Ros) McDermott and Tom McDermott.

She is survived by her children; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernie; her mother, Kate; her father, Bill; sisters, Mary Jean Mannes, Beth Benson; her brothers, Bob, Bill and her grandson, Patrick Cooper.

Mass of Christian Burial: 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2013 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Grand Forks, ND.

Visitation: 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday with a 7:00 p.m. vigil service in the Gregory J. Norman Funeral Chapel.

Burial: Calvary Cemetery North, Grand Forks, ND.
