Park High of Cottage Grove won the opener 68-56 over Grand Rapids.

The two southern teams each ended 2-0 over the host schools as they did last year at Grand Rapids. The meet returns to the Rapids in 2007.

The Crimson scored in every way possible, taking advantage of loose3 defense and weak free throw shooting.

It expanded a small lead late in the first half to take a 48-33 lead at the break, then opened the second half with a 23-4 run to put the game out of reach.

Five players reached double figures led by Tony Johnson with 18. Josh Pedretti came off the bench for 15 while Ethan Magstadt hit 13, Dan Lenhardt 12 and Matt Kracher 10.

Doug Bender reached 15 for Bemidji. No one else topped eight.

Bemidji stayed close for 10 minutes trailing 22-15 at that point.

But the Crimson gradually moved to a 48-33 halftime lead before taking total charge in the second half.

It may well be the first time in Bemidji's long history that it has yielded more than 100 points.

Maple Grove took advantage of the loose defense, 19 missed free throws and constant foul problems, using all to its advantage.

The winners ran the back door to precision, used the give and go numerous times and penetrated the Bemidji zone almost at will all day.

Their tight man to man defense allowed Bemidji only one five point run in the opening half but nothing more than four thereafter.

After being outboarded in the first half, the Crimson ended with a 49-38 lead with Jordan Nelson cleaning 11 and 11 other players having at least one. Chris Marty had seven and Bender and Jeff Schaper six for Bemidji.

The Jacks had 18 turnovers, their season low. Maple Grove had 17, many in the final five minutes when the second and third fives were on the floor

Bemidji heads to Hibbing Tuesday and St. Cloud Tech Saturday for a section test.

Park wins

Park followed a similar path in besting Grand Rapids.

Friday the Thunderhawks narrowed a 22 point deficit to one in losing to Maple Grove.

The Hawks were unable to repeat Saturday.

Like Bemidji, they remained within reach through the opening half, closing to 26-25 in the final minute before Park's final bucket established a 28-25 lead at the break.

The Wolfpack opened the second half with a 13 point run to go ahead 41-25 and the Rapids never got closer than 12 again.

Jake Lindstrom hit 17, Brad Sand 14 and Craig Buggs 13 to pace the winners.

Ryan Gibeau hit 26 for the Rapids to take game honors. No one else reached double figures.

Park held at 43-31 lead off the boards with Sand claiming 16. Gibeau had nine for the Rapids.

Park had 18 turnovers and Grand Rapids 12.
