Mangeline Edna (Carlson) Kirkeby, 89 of East Grand Forks and Shevlin, MN died on Thursday, September 5, 2013 peacefully at her home in East Grand Forks.

Mangeline was born on October 12, 1923 to Abner and Nicoline (Kjorsvik) Carlson in Teien Township, Kittson County, MN where she attended rural school and Drayton High School. She worked as a medical technician at Waldren Hospital and Clinic in Drayton for four years. She married George Kirkeby on December 8, 1946 at the Carlson Family Farm in Robbin, MN. They lived in Grand Forks, Drayton and moved to Shevlin, MN in 1951. In 2001, after Georges death in December of 2000, she moved to East Grand Forks.

Mangeline was an active volunteer, involved with her church, the community, and civic issues. She was also an avid knitter of mittens. In 1979 she was honored as First Lady of Clearwater County. She served as Ninth District American Legion Auxiliary President in 1982. In 1986 she was instrumental in the establishment of the Clearwater County Food Shelf. Mangeline was a wonderful mother, neighbor, leader, and friend to many.

Mangeline is survived by her daughter, Kristine Kirkeby (John Carter), Eugene, OR; daughter, Judith Kirkeby, Olympia, WA; son, George (Monica) Kirkeby, Roseburg, OR; daughter, Dardi (Bryan) Olson, East Grand Forks, MN; and granddaughters, Emily (Tyler) Barta and Alicia Olson. She is also survived by her sister, Joan (James) Evenson of Grand Forks, brother, Karl (Barbara) Carlson of Park Rapids, MN, sister-in-law, Donna Carlson of Rockford, IL and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband George, brothers Lyle and Dallas, and many other close relatives and friends.

Memorials preferred to Clearwater Lutheran Church, Clearwater Library Foundation or Altru Hospice.

Services were previously held.
