Man who died in canoe accident identified
BRAINERD — A 64-year-old Brainerd man who died in a canoe accident Sunday has been identified.
Peter Johnson was found unresponsive in the Gull River Sunday after his canoe capsized. The Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report at 2:12 p.m. Sunday of two people in the river near Barbeau Road, according to a press release from the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office.
Nearby residents located Thadeus Strader, 4, of Gilbert, Ariz., in the water and brought him to shore. He was later released from the hospital, according to the press release.
Attempts to resuscitate Johnson were unsuccessful and he was transported to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office, according to the press release.
Both Johnson and Strader were wearing life jackets at the time. The cause of the capsizing is still under investigation.
The press release did not indicate Johnson’s relationship to Strader.
Assisting the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office at the scene was the Nisswa Police Department, Brainerd Fire Department, North Memorial Ambulance, and North Memorial Air Care.
